Any business sending messages to US numbers through a cloud-based phone provider must complete this additional verification step. You can file your A2P registration directly in the OpenPhone app.

What is automated text messaging?

Automated text messaging allows you to schedule text messages to send to your contacts based on custom triggers and conditions based on time or activity.

Keep your customers in the loop when you’re not available with time-based conditions. For example, create an after-hours SMS auto-responder that sends automatic text responses when your team has gone home for the day.

Set up automated text messages based on whenusing activity-based conditions that reach your customers take specific actions, such as after they book an appointment with you or their delivery is complete.

How do I make an automated text message?

There are several different business SMS automation features in OpenPhone.

Auto-replies
Auto-replies let you automatically respond to an incoming call or text. To set up auto-replies:

  1. Click Settings on the left-hand menu.
  2. Under Workspace, select Phone Numbers. If you have multiple phone numbers, be sure to select the number you want to set up auto-replies on.
  3. Scroll to the Auto-Replies section and set up your auto-replies.

Scheduled messages
Use scheduled messages to automatically send a text at a specific time:

  1. Navigate to the contact you want to receive your message and draft it.
  2. Click the clock icon.
  3. Select the time for the message to be sent.

Send texts via Zapier or the OpenPhone API
SMS via the Zapier integration or OpenPhone API lets you send automatic text messages based on custom triggers you create.

Can you automate a text response?

Yes, you can automate text responses on iPhone (iOS) and Android devices.

Sending an auto-reply text message from an iPhone requires a workaround using the Driving Focus mode functionality. Here’s how:

  1. Open your iPhone, go to Settings, and tap Focus.
  2. Click Driving Focus. Or, if you don’t see it available, click the (+) in the upper right corner and tap Driving.
  3. Tap Customize Focus.
  4. Tap Auto-Reply and type in the Auto-Reply message you want to send.
  5. To enable auto-replies, activate Driving Focus mode on your iPhone.

Auto-reply texts for Android phones aren’t available by default when you buy a device, but you can use workaround apps on your phone.

  1. Download SMS Auto Reply, a free auto-response app from the Google Play store.
  2. Open the app and click Add/Edit.
  3. Create a name for your automated text template, then write the message.
  4. Select SMS as the channel and tap Save to activate your auto-reply.

While these options make auto-replies possible, they’re not necessarily the best way for businesses to send automated text messages.
