What is an 877 phone number?

An 877 phone number provides your customers, clients, or stakeholders a toll-free way to contact you without having to worry about long-distance fees.

The 877 toll-free area code is part of the North American Number Plan (NANP) program with over 20 countries and regions participating, including the United States, Canada, Trinidad, and Grenada.

Anyone from these countries can call an 877 number for free. Plus, the 877 toll-free area code is not tied to a certain location, so it’s a great option if you have customers nationwide across the country or internationally. However, even if you’re located outside of North America, you can still sign up for an 877 number with OpenPhone.

It only takes four steps to get started with OpenPhone’s toll-free numbers.

Why you should get an 877 business number

If you’re expanding your business nationwide, having a VoIP toll-free number with an 877 area code can give your customers a strong first impression. Here’s more on why you should get an 877 number:

Create a professional image

If you're looking to expand nationwide, an 877 phone number can make your small business appear more established and reputable. Whether you're a solopreneur or have a large team, an 877 toll-free number can help you appear like a larger business.

Increase your incoming calls

A toll-free number encourages customers to contact your team when they need you without the concern of long-distance fees.

Prioritize customer service, not costs. Unlike other VoIP phone systems, OpenPhone provides unlimited incoming calls, so you don’t need to worry about monthly toll-free call credits. Plus, enjoy free calls to the United States and Canada whenever you need.

Customize your own 877 number

Choose your own custom vanity number that stands out from the competition and stands out to your customers. For example, if you want to order flowers for someone special, it’s hard to forget the number 1-800-FLOWERS.

Call and text from anywhere

OpenPhone makes it easy to communicate with customers by call or text, no matter where you are. All you need is WiFi, and you can get in touch using any computer or cellphone. OpenPhone is available on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and even your browser.

Benefits of choosing OpenPhone for your 877 number

Easily get numbers when you need them

Get US, Canadian, and toll-free numbers in a few simple steps, and add teammates as you need them. You can even get numbers with different local area codes to better serve specific cities. Create phone numbers for different functions, like customer support, and assign multiple team members to receive calls from that number.

Collaborate better as a team

Your whole team can work from one shared inbox for all customer communications, helping reduce silos, move faster, and get your team aligned around your company objectives.

OpenPhone helps you see what everyone’s working on. Use internal threads to collaborate, problem solve, and assign tasks in a private conversation directly on a call or message. Use inbox viewers and call views to easily see which team members have viewed a customer interaction.

Toll-free texting that works harder for you

Build stronger customer relationships over toll-free texting with time-saving features that keep your team efficient and organized.

Set up auto-replies to acknowledge your customer’s texts and send a response right away. If your team is working across time zones, schedule text messages at a time that’s convenient for your customers. Plus, do more in less time by creating snippets to answer common questions in minutes and automating text flows with Zapier.

Manage incoming calls easily

Simplify how your team handles incoming calls and enhance the customer experience with OpenPhone’s call management features

Ensure quick response times by ringing all available teammates simultaneously and allow multiple team members to be on separate calls using the same number. Guide customers to the right person by setting up a phone menu that lets them choose their desired department.

Have a call coming in after business hours? Set up after hours call forwarding so you don’t miss the calls that matter to you.

Take work off your team’s plate

Help your teams spend more time speaking with customers and less time on tedious admin work.

Is your team tired of taking endless notes during customer calls? With OpenPhone, they can focus on customer conversations and rely on automatic call recording combined with AI-generated call summaries and transcriptions.

And with our native HubSpot and Salesforce integrations, they won’t even have to update your CRM after each call — calls and texts are automatically logged and tracked in your account.

“The shared communications history in OpenPhone is just so valuable. Everything we do…all of that is a shared history so that any one person can step in immediately and take over a function, a task, or a relationship and understand what’s happened in that relationship and be able to pick it up without causing any hiccups”

How does 877 differ from other toll-free numbers?

While you may be unfamiliar with the 877 toll-free code, you’ve probably heard of an 800, 844, 866, or 888 number. They’re toll-free prefixes that tell your clients they can call you, and you’ll cover the cost. All the codes work the same way and serve the same purpose.

There are currently seven unique toll-free codes to ensure there are enough toll-free numbers to go around. In 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created additional toll-free codes when it ran out of 800 numbers.

As the demand for toll-free numbers went up, more codes were added. Newer options like the 833 and 844 toll-free codes ensure any company can get a toll-free phone number  when they need it.

How do toll-free numbers work?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for managing and providing toll-free numbers, which are typically distributed through a “Responsible Organization” (RespOrgs). RespOrgs reserve, manage, and distribute toll-free numbers to business owners on a first-come, first-served basis.

OpenPhone is an FCC-approved telecommunications provider of toll-free numbers. When you get an 877 number through OpenPhone, you know you’re getting a reliable number to manage your calls and texts.

From the caller’s perspective, a toll-free phone number functions like any other phone number. The only difference between calling a toll-free and a local number is there are no long-distance charges for the caller — from a cell phone or a landline.

Do I own my 877 number when I purchase it from OpenPhone?

When you purchase a toll-free phone number from OpenPhone, you own it forever. You can take your number to a different phone service provider if you choose to.

How do I build trust with customers when I use an 877 number?
down arrow

Sometimes toll-free numbers are mistaken for scams or spam if the customer doesn't recognize the number. Here’s how you can prevent that from happening:

Collect consent: Provide multiple options for customers to opt in to receive texts from you. Use website forms or emails, or share a consent request over the phone.

Notify customers of your number: When on the phone, tell customers they can expect to see calls or texts from your 877 number. Ask them to add your phone number to their contacts.

Use a local number: Use toll-free and local area codes to reach your customers. Use a toll-free number to receive customer support phone calls, but reach out to customers with a more familiar local number instead.
